Winchester District Strategic Partnership (WDSP) has been working with Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC) on 20:12, the campaign to cut the carbon footprint of Winchester by 20% by the end of 2012.

The Winchester Declaration on Climate Change is the pledge for organisations to cut their own footprint. The Winchester Declaration on Climate Change was launched in January in central Winchester.

The first wave of organisations to sign up included the University of Winchester, Winchester Area Community Action, Winchester City Council and Winchester College. Winchester and Eastleigh HealthCare Trust is already working to a NHS scheme for carbon footprint reduction, but as a local public service organisation it has the same goals as the Winchester Declaration and has also signed. Since the launch, DC Leisure has also signed up. DC Leisure is the Council's partner which runs the River Park Leisure Centre.

Frequently asked questions

Where has the 20:12 target come from?

The Winchester District Strategic Partnership has set the target to reduce the District’s CO2 emissions by 20% by 2012.  This is an ambitious target, but we know we need to considerably reduce our CO2 emissions and, by working together, it is achievable. The Winchester Declaraion on Climate Change is one of a number of initiatives to help meet the target.

What year's emissions should I use as a baseline?

The baseline year for the district target it 2007. However, we know it can be difficult to collect together the data from previous years, so you are free to declare the baseline year that best fits your available data. This could be either a calendar year, or financial year.

What geographical area should this cover?

We want to make the Winchester Declaraion on Climate Change a useful part of your organisation's work towards reducing carbon emissions. Whilst we are concerned with CO2 emissions from the Winchester District, where organisations cover a wider area the quoted carbon footprint could cover that wider area or just the Winchester District, depending on which is most appropriate for you.

What emissions should I include as a baseline?

The carbon footprint should as a minimum include CO2 emissions from your operational buildings and business travel. You may also wish to include emissions from other built assets, staff commuting or procured goods and services. This will depend on how simple it is to collect the data, and how useful it will be in developing ways of reducing your emissions.

Some of my data is based on estimations. Is this okay?

Yes, estimated emissions are fine - measuring carbon footprints often involves estimations and approximations.

I am a local householder, not an organisation. How can I share my commitment to reducing my carbon footprint?

The 20:12 target is for everyone in Winchester district - organisations, businesses and local people. The Winchester Declaration on Climate Change is for organisations to pledge their commitment. We are considering a pledge for local people to show their commitment. Households and individuals as well as organisations are also all encouraged to join Winchester Action on Climate Change.

What help is available?

Winchester Action on Climate Change can provide support and advice to help measure your carbon footprint and find effective ways to make significant carbon reductions. Contact Chris Holloway: Email chris.holloway@winacc.org.uk or telephone 01962 827083.
