4 person household footprint: 5.5 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 1.38 tonnes per person

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Cavity Wall insulation, cutting down on car travel, committing not to fly unless I really have to (including switching to trains to travel in Europe and going on staycations) broken down my reef fish tank, and losing my dog last year, going meat free on at least one day a week and eventually the majority of meals to be vegetatrian.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Install wind power/solar power, further insulation in the roof, using reusable nappies for my two boys, grow more homegrown foods in the garden, compost more waste

Any other comments
From the last footprint I have had a significant reduction!!! but the people in the house are two under two babies does that count as a person?

The City of Winchester Trust is a Charity managed by voluntary trustees and one part time (2 mornings/week). employee. It is based in the Heritage Centre which is used 2-3 days per week for secretarial business, meeings and discussions.

Liz Meech, Feb 10

Individual footprint: 4.4 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Loft insulation, change to energy saving bulbs, turning off electrical appliances at the wall

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Check tyre pressures on car, use public transport to commute to work, switch to green tariff on electricity bills and get a real-time display to monitor energy usage.

Winchester City Council, Mar 09

Organisation footprint: 4,482.5 tonnes

Winchester City Council — Public organisation

Measured using the Carbon Trust carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Consolidation of offices onto a single site and roll-out of flexible working; Installation of roof insulation in West Wing office; Implementation of lease car policy for lower emission cars.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Move from tower PCs to thin client devices; Refurbishment of Guildhall to include roof insulation, secondary glazing, lighting upgrades, air handling units and upgraded heating controls. Under consideration are: Investigate the viability of hydro-generation in Abbey Mill; Investigate the viability of CHP with district heating serving the council offices, among others; Energy efficient lighting in public conveniences; Smart metering

The NI 185 methodology captures CO2 emissions from local authority operations and includes our office buildings, the Guildhall, museums, car parks, leisure centres, public conveniences, street lighting, business travel, park and ride buses, refuse and street cleaning vehicles. Further information about the proportion of the CO2 emissions arising from each of these categories can be found on our website at http://www.winchester.gov.uk/EnvironmentAndPlanning/ClimateChange/CarbonManagementProgramme

Daniel Foulds, Feb 10

2 person household footprint: 5.8 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 2.90 tonnes per person

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Less dependency on transport both personal and public

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Replacing old light bulbs with energy saving versions Looking at replacing old white goods with higher rated Looking at the introduction of double glazing

Camilla Warren, Feb 10

4 person household footprint: 4.3 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 1.08 tonnes per person

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Compost bin acquired. Changed all light bulbs to energy efficient. Kept thermostat at 15' during winter.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Use eco print on printer. Look into switching energy tariff to green one. Make sure members of household don't leave chargers plugged in unnecessarily. Hang clothes outside to dry.

Marco Poliafico, Feb 10

Individual footprint: 6.9 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
home improvement

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
carbon footprint from trips

Paul Montgomery, Feb 10

2 person household footprint: 26.7 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 13.35 tonnes per person

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Reduced local travel by car, switched to cycle, public transport. Started lighting replacement but low energy spotlights are still expensive. However two long distance air journeys and european air journeys to visit family blow everything else away.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Cut air travel. Drive less - reduce long distance car journeys too, use public transport more (plan better?) Continue replacement of lamps (and other electrical applicances) as appropriate

Any other comments
I was shocked to see the carbon cost of our (untypical) air travel in 2009.

Martin Tod, Feb 10

Individual footprint: 4.0 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Reduced gas usage by around a quarter by working out how to programme the timer on the central heating and turning the thermostat down a couple of degrees. Cut electric bills by about 7% by changing our remaining halogen lights and buying a real-time meter to help us spot things that use a lot of electricity. Cut car travel by 13% by driving less and cycling or using public transport or lift-sharing more. Cut flights by 84% by not going to the US - and going on holiday to Barcelona by train...

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Have just changed the car to a second hand BlueMotion VW Polo (£0 car tax, 99g/km CO2), and moved to using Ecotricity for my electricity - so should see the effect of this in the next 12 months. Still want to cut heating bills further, so will turn down the thermostat even further!

Marwell Wildlife, Nov 09

Organisation footprint: 1,744.0 tonnes

Marwell Wildlife — Private organisation

Measured using the Carbon Trust carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Marwell have been working on energy efficiency measures through 2009 and increasing awareness of consumption in different areas of the park. Switch off policies and better thermostat control are already making a measurable difference

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
In the short term we are working hard to identify more efficiency savings. We are rolling out domestic energy monitors from Current Cost to monitor individual buildings and encouraging staff to use these at home for thier own monitoring. We are assessing renewable energy technologies now to see which would be suitable for use in the park to achieve significant savings

Any other comments
Our carbon footprint is for Jan - Dec 2008 and includes energy embodied in water supplies, sewage treatment, waste management and staff commuting so we are looking at all these areas for futher reductions.
