Recently posted Carbon Footprint Reports submitted by WinACC members are shown below.

Angela Sealey, Mar 13

2 person household footprint: 6.0 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 3.00 tonnes per person

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Less use of flights. Less use of car. Used less water.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Continue with same, trying to reduce air and car travel.

It is very difficult to record this. We need a much simpler system.

Individual footprint: 3.2 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Travelling where possible by bus and train rather than by car.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
In the absence of a property to improve, I am sharing information with everyone else to encourage them to save energy at home! My landlady has many horrible old halogen bulbs that need replacing with LEDs.

David Knight, Jan 13

2 person household footprint: 5.1 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 2.55 tonnes per person

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Reduced annual driving Now nearly always use public transport Changed 14 bulbs to LED , mostly from quartz hallogen Have switched to ecotricity for gas having been with them for electricity for some time. Have constructed a new lazy bed

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
1, Will investigate the possibility of an air to water heat pump. 2. Hope to cycle more and bus less 3. Consider fitting blinds / insulated shutters to some windows 4. Consider small Trombe' wall on south facing wall to duct hot air into bathroom 5. Will consider investing in a local renewable energy scheme. 6. Will continue to campaign for local /national/ regional/ global cap on fossil fuel use and decarbonisation of central electricity generation including saying no to shale gas!! Personal carbon footprint reduction alone is not enough- the urgency of the situation requires action at all political levels.

My personal footprint estimated to be 3.28 tonnes. Our household average is significantly lower than Act on CO2's estimate of the matched national average of 12.89 tonnes. Have not included our cottage in Wales in the calculation as the cottage is frequently used by family and friends making the calculations difficut. There is scope for solar as roof is south facing. I tried to attach the excell spread sheet for our diesel/ gas/ electricity consumption over the last 4 years to this report but file type not permitted. Am happy to communicate this data to anyone interested.

4 person household footprint: 5.2 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 1.30 tonnes per person

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Lined inner wall of garage (where it adjoins the living accommodation) with insulation. Central heating on in kitchen only (using wood burning stove to heat rest of house).

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
External cladding of south wall and top up insulation to be pumped into the east, north and west cavity walls.

Andrzej Nowosielski, Jan 13

3 person household footprint: 4.5 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 1.50 tonnes per person

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Installing wood burning stove as main space heater.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Improve insulation in porch rebuilt and double glaze. Investigate use of new PV technology.

Bob Whitmarsh, Jan 13

Individual footprint: 2.3 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
We replaced 4 double glazed windows with A-grade frames. We cut our car mileage by cycling in Winchester and didn't fly anywhere. Our electricity supplier Ecotricity continues to increase the proportion of renewable electricity in its energy mix. We ran our thermostat at 17degC this winter.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Nothing planned. Hard to know what to do next!

Paul Hamilton, Dec 12

Individual footprint: 1.9 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
after free energy survey, changed washing machine & fridge freezer. Sold car. Draught proofing improved.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
not much more I can economically or usefully do.

I have long since made compost, used freecycle, used recycling bin. Grow seasonal food. Use a pressure cooker haybox (actually a victorian idea). Don't use the oven. If it ain't broke I don't replace it!

Individual footprint: 1.1 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
My carbon footprint has increased over the past year as I have been living in a less energy efficient flat. However, I mitigated the increase by changing the hot water settings, improving the hot water tank’s insulation and adding a draft excluder. I have continued the low-carbon behaviours I had adopted previously, including living without a car and not flying.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
My electricity usage should fall this year as I have returned to my previous flat which is more energy efficient. However, my transport emissions will rise as I will be commuting to London several days a week whereas previously I have walked to work. Overall, I would expect my carbon footprint to remain low due to the various low-carbon behaviours I have already adopted. My focus will be on using my influence to reduce carbon emissions elsewhere, through my involvement with WinACC and my paid employment.

Any other comments
My carbon footprint figure excludes occasional car transport as Act on CO2 only asks about regular vehicle use. These emissions were higher than usual in 2011/12 due to moving house and using a car on holiday.

Chris Holloway, Aug 12

Individual footprint: 6.3 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Replaced a very old leaky freezer with a A* one. Got more windows double-glazed. Got gadgets that switch off things at the plug from the other side of the room, so we don't have to crawl under things to switch them off at the wall.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
We got solar pv this week.

architecture plb, Apr 12

Organisation footprint: 112.1 tonnes

architecture plb — Private organisation

Measured using the Carbon Trust carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Improved energy efficiency via careful monitoring and staff awareness to reduce wastage

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
1. Create more energy efficient office buildings via refurbishment or seek alternative accommodation 2. Encourage staff to commute on foot / cycle where possible 3. Reduce business travel where possible
