Individual footprint: 3.3 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Cut back on annual car mileage by almost 2000 miles. Reduced hot water tank thermostat setting. Trying not to use the car but to walk, cycle or bus instead everywhere in Winchester.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Replace some old and blurry double-glazing with better U-value double-glazing of the same thickness in the same frames. Replace our ageing 180 g CO2/km car (102,000 miles) with a 120 g CO2/km model. Avoid flying. Use the train and/or car to travel on the Continent.

Individual footprint: 6.0 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
I have tried to reduce the amount of car journeys I make.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
I need to reduce the amount of car journeys/mileage. Most of the car journeys are work related, but I will try and use public transport more. Transport accounts for two-thirds of my carbon footprint, while my home and appliances are lower than the national average. I will make some savings by replacing more light bulbs with energy efficient types. I am also planning on reducing my gas expenditure by replacing my boiler. Even though it is relatively new, it is not an efficient design and requires a separate hot water tank.

Individual footprint: 6.6 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Turned heating down, wearing more jumpers Washing at 30 Switching things off at the wall and not using standby Switching lights off and swapping to energy saving bulbs Using car less Not flying this year

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Cavity wall insulation Double glazed french doors Smaller car More energy saving light bulbs

A lot of the decisions we make are linked to economic factors. For instance, I haven't flown this year because cash is tight. Ironically for the same reason I haven't bought a smaller car this year so one kind of cancels out the other. The honest fact is - if I had more cash my footprint would be bigger - human nature I suppose!

Individual footprint: 3.3 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
All holidays in UK. Turned off standbys (most of the time).

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Drive less and drive more slowly; improve draught proofing and insulation (particularly in shed where I work); more time in bed.

DR DAVID P KNIGHT, Oct 08

Individual footprint: 5.4 tonnes

Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.

Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
Replaced all bulbs with low energy ones. Obtained a bicycle from Winchester tip and use this at least 2x per week for local journeys. Declined opportunities to fly. I now take the train to Oxford when needed there for meetings. I travel only once a month to work instead of once a week.

Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
Cut down car usage to the essential. Cycle more frequently for local journeys and shopping. Use local shops more. Share lifts for visits to Bramdean for sculpting. Close windows and curtains at night. Reduce temperature in living room and bathroom. Only heat rooms in use rather than relying on background central heating. Turn off computer when not in use. Eat more vegetarian food. Consider fitting blinds and shutters to reduce heat loss. Consider installing woodburner in garage. Reduce expenditure on non-essential items.

Any other comments
ActonCO2 does not take into consideration the fact that we have a large passive solar heater on one corner of the house. My calculations of the energy used from the fuel bills may be incorrect (too high).

I've cut down on flights and have taken just one short-haul return flight in the last year, whereas I used to fly three or four times a year, including some long-haul flights. I have also devoted a lot of my spare time to WinACC as I wanted to be more actively involved in combating climate change. During the previous year I cut my energy consumption and switched to a green electricity supplier (Good Energy). I gave up my car two years ago and now travel mainly by public transport when it is too far to walk or cycle.

I am about to get some thermal-lined curtains to insulate the huge patio doors in my lounge as this is where most heat is currently lost from my flat (I just have blinds at present). I also aim to continue influencing others, through increasing their awareness and knowledge of climate change, and encouraging them to take action. I will do this through continuing my involvement with WinACC and starting to get more actively involved with environmental issues at work.
