Individual footprint: 10.5 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Some loft insulation over about 1/4 of the area. Only 100mm thick
Reduced output temp of boiler”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“Increase loft insulation to at least 3/4 of area to 150mm
Investigate cavity wall insulation. But only two outside wall”

2 person household footprint: 2.7 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 1.35 tonnes per person
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Using local food sources whenever possible - Riverford/Abel & Cole for veg and meat/fish, Suma Wholefoods for bulk orders of store cupboard items. Growing our own organic veg in window boxes. Composting. Holidaying within the UK.”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“Switch from Ecotricity to Good Energy as the latter invest in 100% renewable energy (their site claims this could reduce our household emissions by 600kg per annum). Renovate old bike to use more frequently for local trips. Better planning for any supermarket trips so reducing number of car trips. Fitting a 'chimney balloon' to stop heat being lost up chimney.”

“We live in a rented property and the landlord is totally unwilling (eg. won't even allow a water meter to be fitted!) to allow/make any changes to the current condition of the property - which is not double-glazed, needs a new boiler and could definitely do with better insulation! Feel this would be a common problem for other tenants and would welcome suggestions on how we can take action.”
Bob Whitmarsh, Oct 08
Individual footprint: 3.3 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Cut back on annual car mileage by almost 2000 miles. Reduced hot water tank thermostat setting. Trying not to use the car but to walk, cycle or bus instead everywhere in Winchester.”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“Replace some old and blurry double-glazing with better U-value double-glazing of the same thickness in the same frames. Replace our ageing 180 g CO2/km car (102,000 miles) with a 120 g CO2/km model. Avoid flying. Use the train and/or car to travel on the Continent.”
Neil Marriott, Oct 08
Individual footprint: 6.0 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“I have tried to reduce the amount of car journeys I make.”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“I need to reduce the amount of car journeys/mileage. Most of the car journeys are work related, but I will try and use public transport more. Transport accounts for two-thirds of my carbon footprint, while my home and appliances are lower than the national average. I will make some savings by replacing more light bulbs with energy efficient types. I am also planning on reducing my gas expenditure by replacing my boiler. Even though it is relatively new, it is not an efficient design and requires a separate hot water tank.”
Deborah Fleming, Oct 08
Individual footprint: 6.6 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Turned heating down, wearing more jumpers
Washing at 30
Switching things off at the wall and not using standby
Switching lights off and swapping to energy saving bulbs
Using car less
Not flying this year
”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“Cavity wall insulation
Double glazed french doors
Smaller car
More energy saving light bulbs”

“A lot of the decisions we make are linked to economic factors. For instance, I haven't flown this year because cash is tight.
Ironically for the same reason I haven't bought a smaller car this year so one kind of cancels out the other.
The honest fact is - if I had more cash my footprint would be bigger - human nature I suppose!”
Robert Hutchison, Oct 08
Individual footprint: 3.3 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“All holidays in UK. Turned off standbys (most of the time). ”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“Drive less and drive more slowly; improve draught proofing and insulation (particularly in shed where I work); more time in bed. ”
adurham, Oct 08
4 person household footprint: 12.9 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 3.23 tonnes per person
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Low energy lightbulbs, less flying, recycling as much as possible. ”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“More low energy lightbulbs, less use of appliances e.g. tumble dryer, move to greener electricity tariff, more walking and cycling, less use of car, composting. ”
DR DAVID P KNIGHT, Oct 08
Individual footprint: 5.4 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Replaced all bulbs with low energy ones. Obtained a bicycle from Winchester tip and use this at least 2x per week for local journeys. Declined opportunities to fly. I now take the train to Oxford when needed there for meetings. I travel only once a month to work instead of once a week.”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“Cut down car usage to the essential. Cycle more frequently for local journeys and shopping. Use local shops more. Share lifts for visits to Bramdean for sculpting. Close windows and curtains at night. Reduce temperature in living room and bathroom. Only heat rooms in use rather than relying on background central heating. Turn off computer when not in use. Eat more vegetarian food. Consider fitting blinds and shutters to reduce heat loss. Consider installing woodburner in garage. Reduce expenditure on non-essential items.”
Any other comments
“ActonCO2 does not take into consideration the fact that we have a large passive solar heater on one corner of the house. My calculations of the energy used from the fuel bills may be incorrect (too high). ”
paferguson, Oct 08
3 person household footprint: 10.8 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 3.60 tonnes per person
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Have had the tiled bay window taken back to the inner wall and rebuilt using modern techniques and insulation. Have added 3 energy saving light bulbs. Now use a machine that measures current use of electricity and it has been revealing as to how much energy certain appliances and lights use.”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“We have 20 of the halogen light bulbs in various rooms and also 3 neon tube lights which use a lot of electricity - working on alternatives.
Already have solar panels for the hot water and we are now looking at ways to make electricity.
We are planning to replace the front door which currently is 50+ years old and although it is draft proofed we think it's days are numbered.”
