5 person household footprint: 13.6 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 2.72 tonnes per person
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Reduced electricity use by 10% and gas by 2% over 2008 compared to 2007. During 2008 - purchased a 'Watson' electricity meter, replaced most lights with low energy, installed intelli plugs to remove standby on TVs and Digi boxes. Removed an old style LED bedside clock (40watts= £40 a year!) Put in heavy curtains on most windows along with shutters. Purchased a new Fridge and Oven, topped up loft insulation to 270mm, put in cavity wall insulation in the only room which had a cavity wall (bathroom at the back of the house). Brought some warm house socks and a goose down duvet!”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“Reduce draughts in the house including around doors and windows & put in heavy curtains on remaining windows. Replace the remaining standard lights with low energy ones. Install chimney balloons, and a thermostat for the gas boiler. I would love to do a lot more but our house is grade listed 2, so even if I wanted to just replace the single panes of glass in our lovely windows with 2 panes (just the glass!) I could not. I would also like to install a solar water heater, but for the same reasons, I am unable to!!!”

“Fitted low energy lightbulbs.
Turned down heating thermostat and reduced the time that the hot water and heating were on. Turned off radiators in unused rooms. Use a gas fire downstairs during the day instead of the central heating.
Had cavity wall insulation fitted.
Changed to metered water.”

Replace more batteries with rechargeable.
Use oven less for cooking by using our new Remoska instead (only 470 watts)
Buy more local produce.”

“Don't fly or drive anywhere. I have been on flights in my younger days but I wouldn't do it now. I chose not to learn to drive. This has placed limitations on my life but the planet is worth it, I think. Transport modes used are feet, bike or train. I'm a vegan. Always try to reduce, re-use, recycle. Always shop locally from farmer's market and independent shops rather than supermarkets. Don't think there is much else I could do. I don't use my central heating even though it is there..there wasn't a "don't use" option available on the website. As my flat is authority owned I can't install solar panels etc.”

“Increase lift sharing; be more selective with TV viewing; utilise oven better to cook more than one meal at a time. ”

“Am disappointed that our footprint is so high compared to the national average, having done so much to reduce it! I guess it reflects the size of the house and the fact that we still run two cars for work. Reducing it any further would seem to need complete change of lifestyle. ”
Giles Gooding, Jan 09
5 person household footprint: 6.2 tonnes
Measured using the Act On CO2 carbon calculator.
Based on the household size, this carbon footprint equates to 1.24 tonnes per person
Measures taken in the last 12 months to reduce footprint
“Replaced windows with double glazing (wooden not pvc)
Blocked off a few more draughts in loft room.
Keep thermostat reduced and use wood burner in our sitting room to keep warm. Don't use the radiator in this room at all.
Try to walk even more than previously.
”
Measures to be taken in the next 12 months to reduce footprint
“We want another wood burner in the family room downstairs. It has been particularly cold this winter and we feel it during the day when the sun isn't out and heating not on. This should allow us to heat downstairs using wood and upstairs using the gas fired radiators.
Find an eco alternative to the few spot lights I have in the kitchen.
Need to plump up loft insulation. We have a loft conversion so don't have much flat loft space but what is there isn't deep enough.
”

“We moved into this house in 2004 and I have monitored my gas/elec consumption ever since. We have reduced our consumption from the first year by 51% for gas and 27% for elec.
For us gas heats our house and water so reduced our gas usage by installing a wood burning stove which allowed us to turn down the thermostat considerably and also filled many draughts, put curtains up at every window and draw the curtains at dusk.
Electricity was reduced by actively turning off lights, filling the kettle according to how much water required, not using standby, turning off transformers on things like digital radios/laptops/mobile phone charges etc . I once noticed a transformer was a little warm even though the appliance was not on!
Travel: We now don't need the car for work and haven't flown now for a couple of years. Before that we only seemed to fly once a year (i never did like it). We still travel to the South of France but go by train. DirectGov doesn't take this into account.
