Winchester leads the way towards a low carbon society

The first wave of organisations to sign up include the University of Winchester, Winchester Area Community Action, Winchester City Council and Winchester College. Winchester and Eastleigh HealthCare Trust is already working to a NHS scheme for carbon footprint reduction, but as a local public service organisation it has the same goals as the Winchester Declaration and has also signed. Since the launch, DC Leisure has also signed up. DC Leisure is the Council's partner which runs the River Park Leisure Centre.

The chairman of Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC), Robert Hutchison, called on Winchester City Council’s Environment Scrutiny Panel on 2 February 2010 to “nudge” the Cabinet to act decisively to cut greenhouse gas emissions from domestic energy and transport.

Where has the 20:12 target come from?
The Winchester District Strategic Partnership has set the target to reduce the District’s CO2 emissions by 20% by 2012. This is an ambitious target, but we know we need to considerably reduce our CO2 emissions and, by working together, it is achievable. The Winchester Declaraion on Climate Change is one of a number of initiatives to help meet the target.
