I think the greening campaign is excellent. The greening olivers battery page looks really good. Well done all involved, I look forward to hearing more.

Hello,

Just to add that there will be a meeting of the low carbon refurb group on Wednesday, 20th February at 7.15pm in the Bishop on the Bridge pub.

Please bring note pads and diaries so that we can swap details, pool knowledge, note our strengths and start acting on climate change in the domestic sector.

Your thoughts and ideas are much anticipated. I have a few ideas to put to the group- many of which came about from a discussion with Pete Pitfield and Hena Chowdry.

We are looking at starting a Greening Campaign (Terena Plowright gave a wonderful lecture on this last week- see www.greening-campaign.co.uk ) in one of the parishes; circulating EST survey forms to give information on energy efficiency of houses and advise of corrective measures; starting community advice schemes to give free, impartial and accurate advice encouraging all Winchester's households to lower their carbon footprint.

Let me know if you can make it as a low turnout will mean postponing the meeting.

Sorry for the late notice, I hope that you can come.

Best wishes

Jess Lloyd

Hi Jerry,

Bob Whitmarsh's letter refers to Winchester in Hampshire, England - not one of the many Winchesters in the USA.

It doesn't mean that we don't have plenty to do to reduce our carbon footprint. One survey showed us having the largest ecological footprint of any city in England. But I wouldn't want anyone to get confused as to where we actually are!

Hi Dr Whitmarsh

I am pleased to see someone with the same name as me upholding the banner of ecological friendliness. i am much afraid that the USA's reputation across the world is just TERRIBLE in this department.

as a nation you use more energy to less purpose than any other country in the world, by a huge margin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_energy_resources_and_consumption#By_country

notice that you are still using nearly six times as much energy as China, even though half your manufacturing has been switched there... shut those doors! :-)

Perhaps One the Most Important National Policy:

Arguing for Feed-in Tariffs (FITs)

The most successful policy to promote renewable energy deployment has many positive effects:

- reduce CO2 emissions
- create jobs
- help secure domestic energy supply
- guarantee investment security
- drive technological innovation
- and provide fair market conditions.

It has beeen called a Policy to Change the World.

Once you've done your carbon footprint post it in a comment or email it to Robert by going to contact us:
Mine is 5.82 tonnes/annum

The average indirect carbon footprint in the UK is 6 tonnes per person* (source carbonfootprint.com). This is from street lights, public services etc.

One very good thing that you can do, although it won't register on the carbon calculator is register with a green tarrif. This will cost very little extra and the money spent on your bill will be invested into renewable energy provision. We have some of the best renewable resources in Europe in the UK, invest your energy spend in developing the capability.
Try this link to find the best one available to you: http://www.greenelectricity.org/tariffs.php
