Hi,
Thanks for you post. You are absolutely right. I work in the field and you are spot on with your comments.

WinAcc works by volunteers, who care about this, both making individual efforts but also banding together in action groups to encourage wider action. I am in the Communications group and, as for many people balance this with life/work pressures. But for this, I would definately like to set up a sustainable travel group. One of the ideas that I have had is "save a million" where a collection of individuals attempt to reduce their car miles over a period by a million. If you would be interested in being the convenor of such a group then I would gladly attend and participate.
Let me know if this interests you.

Hi all,

I've been a member for a while but have kept a low profile and visited the forum regularly and kept a keen eye on the forums. One thing that has struck me is the amount of information dedicated to reducing peoples carbon footprint, mainly around the house. This is all good and anything that can get people to consider their energy usage is a great thing. But surely motoring and the choice of cars and transport is also a large part of peoples footprint that we can influence and change.

The popular misconception that diesel is better is one that really gets me. Yes it has a lower CO2 emission but it also has a larger local pollution footprint which ultimately results in more cases of breathing difficulties and asthma.

What I am trying to say I guess is that there are other options out there and information needs to be given to people to make them aware of the choices. Why buy a diesel car if you do very few miles and they are around town. It is actually cheaper now to buy and run a small petrol engine.

Vegetable oil conversions, LPG conversions, hypermiling your driving style, ensuring your car is healthy and running at its best, using your bike instead, public transport information with timetable etc. There is a whole host of information we could be putting forward that would engage the public at a time when fuel is reaching astronomical figures. It would also raise awareness of our overall campaign.

Just a thought. I think we could all make choices that reduce our footprint (me in particular) in terms of motoring and transport.

I'm not entirely sure what this post was about, just thought I'd share with you some musings on what I feel is a key issue in Winchester and its community at the moment.

It is proposed that a Built Environment group is started. One primary purpose it is suggested would be to comment on all major planning applications.
The relationship/synergies with other groups need to be explored, as there is a certain amount of overlap both in terms of remit and in terms of skills. Groups which could work together with the new proposed group might be the Renewables group and the low carbon refurb group.
The volunteer group coordinator is Stuart Planner (yes that is his real name!)

My suggestion is that the group looks at reducing carbon footprint of use and build through design.

Ben
PS sorry I cant get an action group set up without martin

The DEFRA diagrams are very interesting and I think it's sensible to balance what the biggest impacts are with what it's easiest to get people to do. There are two or more audiences for the environmental message; those who are already engaged and are therefore likely to make more sacrifices, and those who aren't who are unlikely to undertake activity that compromises their current lifestyle.

I wonder if it would be good to have more than one list. A 'getting started' list of simple things like turning off standby appliances, changing to low-energy light-bulbs. An 'intermediate' list such as insulating your home and cycling or walking for short journeys instead of driving, and an 'advanced' list such as not flying, rainwater collection, solar power, etc.

Hi, I know there is some work going on with some of the local schools by WinAcc people and I came across this scheme that apparently 40% of schools in the UK have already joined.

Schools can join the scheme for free and achieve different status levels according to the action they take to become sustainable. There is a school search on the website so you can see if your school has joined and what level they have achieved.

This could provide a good structure to get schools doing more in our area.

Jack,
You've raised an excellent point which will require us to put our thinking caps on with respect to shared house carbon foot-printing!
Dont forget, however that there is lots you can do, such as chatting to your house-mates about energy and getting them involved in WinAcc, cycling, minimising food waste etc.
I'm not an expert on housing but I believe there are obligations for certain energy reducing requirements such as insulation for landlords and an energy performance certificate requirement from April this year, so if you feel that your house is not well insulated then phone your the council and ask to speak to someone about household energy ratings for private rental housing. Let us know how you get on with this.

Regards

As a postgraduate student in Winchester, I live in shared accomodation which i do not own, so reducing my carbon footprint is stunted by my landlords (who cannot install double-glazing and refuse to add insulation).
I am keen on learning about personal carbon reduction however, but many of the points mentioned above are irrelevant to me, perhaps a short questionnaire asking members about their lifestyle would narrow and target an audience?
Then links to different types of individuals, for example families, students etc with suggestions on how to lower their carbon footprint. This could then be expanded with links to local businesses (construction companies for example that install energy saving appliances)to make going green as easy as possible.

Members of the low carbon refurb group have set up of the Greening Campaign in Oliver's Battery. The Campaign will be spreading to other communities where residents are motivated to start running their own campaign. Our progress will be publicised.

See website for information about the aims/content of the Campaign:

www.greening-campaign.co.uk

It is hoped that this is one of the ways to reach households in Winchester communities to encourage and advise them to lower their carbon footprint. Thus reducing domestic energy demand.

We hope that in the near future we will be getting energy efficiency measures installed in homes in Oliver's Battery. Focusing on those easy measures that cost nothing/save money when implemented (in households that are lagging behind) and moving on to more complicated (but higher carbon saving) measures- when time and resources allow.

Watch this space and ask Terena Plowright info@greening-campaign.co.uk about starting the Campaign in your own community- especially if you live in the Winchester district.

Please don't hesitate to contact me (or Terena if appropriate) if you have any further questions.

Admin,

I know there's already a lot of new information on our home page.
However, could you possibly add the following text (edited as you see fit) to the rest of the information. I know it ought to have come with the rest of the action group feedback- I leave it to your discretion how you do this.

Many thanks

Jess

---Action group meeting: Zero Carbon Refurb Group, 20th February---

Dear Friends,

Please circulate this information to anyone you think might be interested- particularly if they have any knowledge of house construction, energy conservation and local (domestic) energy policy.

As group facilitator, I am proposing a meeting of the low carbon refurb group next Wednesday (20th) 7.15pm, in the Bishop on the Bridge pub near the City Mill. All welcome.

Please bring note pads and diaries so that we can swap details, pool knowledge, note our strengths and start acting on climate change in the domestic sector.

Your thoughts and ideas are much anticipated. I have a few ideas to put to the group- many of which came about from a discussion with Pete Pitfield and Hena Chowdry.

We are looking at starting a Greening Campaign (Terena Plowright gave a wonderful lecture on this last week- see www.greening-campaign.co.uk ) in one of the parishes; circulating EST survey forms to give information on energy efficiency of houses and advise of corrective measures; starting community advice schemes to give free, impartial and accurate advice encouraging all Winchester's households to lower their carbon footprint.

Let me know if you can make it as a low turnout will mean postponing the meeting.

Sorry for the late notice, I hope that you can come.

Best wishes

If you have not done so already please sign the petition at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Micheldever/ to support Hampshire County Council, Winchester District Council, Micheldever Parish Council and the residents of the local parishes in declining permission for the proposed development of "Micheldever Station Market Town".

The proposed development by Zurich/Eagle Star, for 12,500 houses on the green field site of Micheldever Station, as an "eco-town", is a cynical re working of plans that all levels of local council have seen to be detrimental to the local area, and have consistently shown unanimous opposition.

The veneer of eco suitability given to the plans can in no way compensate for the damage that would be caused to the local environment, or fully comply with the requirements laid out in the governments "Eco-Town Prospectus" (July 2007)

Accepting these plans would not only destroy the local countryside and biodiversity but would also have a negative impact on the development in the surrounding areas of Andover, Basingstoke, Winchester and South Hampshire.
