2009 report: what the Transport Action Group did in 2009
Over the last year the transport group has set its priorities, contributed to the development of strategies and actions affecting the Winchester area, and worked on some specific initiatives.
 
The group’s priorities concentrate on transport initiatives that reduce carbon:
·         Reducing the need for and managing the demand for travel by car
·         Changing travel behaviour
·         Reducing carbon emissions from cars
·         Reducing the adverse effects of motorised travel.
 
The group’s contributions to key strategies produced by the Council and other bodies have been limited by the possibility of influencing decisions made elsewhere, but have included:
·         Responding to the Hampshire Local Transport Plan Initial Stakeholder Contribution
·         Preparing to respond to the Winchester Town Centre Access Plan
·         Contributing to the transport section of the Winchester District Strategic Plan High Quality Environment Group Draft Climate Change Plan (school and workplace travel plans, development of bus usage, promotion of low emission vehicles, improvement of Winchester cycling, walking and public transport infrastructure, smarter car use)
·         Attending the Winchester Passenger Transport Forum
·         Attending the Winchester Cycle Working Group
 
The group has also pursued the following individual initiatives
·         Priorities for advance bicycle stop lines
·         A cycle by-pass for Romsey Road (a possible model for through cycle routes for the city
·         Exploring a taxi fuel efficiency gadget
·         Reviewing work travel plans (Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council) and developing a future approach
·         Trying to get hold of the Kings’ School draft travel plan
·         Proposing a cross-Winchester non-radial bus route (Abbotts Barton to Romsey Road)
·         Making the case for a Winchester City Council cycling and walking development officer
·         Developing a slide show and other forms of dissemination of the work of the group
·         Planning to participate in the 24 Hours to Save… event on 29 March 2010
·         Attending and contributing to the Winchester City Council cabinet discussion on climate change
·         A rearguard action on the Andover Road railway bridge rebuilding
·         The transport implications of the Cala Homes proposed development at Barton Farm.
