Our transport affects climate change.

When we use fossil fuel, we release greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Scientists overwhelmingly agree that greenhouse gas emissions are one of the main causes of climate change.

UK transport contributes more than 28% of UK greenhouse gas emissions.  And in wealthy Winchester, we produce more than twice as much carbon emissions per person from travel than the UK average. The average person in Winchester creates more than 4.3 tonnes of greenhouse gas from transport per year. With air travel it will be considerably more.

Air quality in Winchester city centre is worse than the European minimum standard. Winchester District has a disproportionately large carbon footprint per person for travel compared with the national average. It has the 27th highest figure out of the 448 local authorities.
