The chairman of Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC), Robert Hutchison has written to the Prime Minister expressing the organisation’s ‘deep dismay’ at the Government’s decision to allow the construction of the third runway at Heathrow Airport to proceed.

In the WinACC letter, copied to the Departments of Energy and Climate Change and the Department of Transport, Mr Hutchison points out that ‘the efforts of organisations like ours are undermined by the Cabinet's hypocritical decision which is projected to permit a doubling of Heathrow air traffic.    If it came about, this would greatly reduce the ability to meet the Government’s targets for reducing the UK's carbon footprint, and thereby hasten the onset of dangerous climate change’.

Mr Hutchison says that the Government is sending out completely the wrong signal and failing to communicate the urgency and seriousness of the climate change crisis.  ‘The Government’s own Committee on Climate Change has said that unconstrained aviation emissions growth would make required reductions in other sectors impossibly large.   The Prime Minister doesn’t seem to understand the seriousness and urgency of the climate change challenge.    Too many people are flying around as if there is no tomorrow – we have no right to steal the future from our children and grandchildren, but that will be the inevitable consequence of the steady increase in global warming and extreme weather events’.
