Too many car park spaces in Winchester?

A report of a survey by a WinACC Transport Group member of car parking in central Winchester shows that the car parks were far from full on all three days. On Saturday 15 May they were only 34% full, on Tuesday 1 June 51%. During the period of the survey, which included busy times such as early afternoons, there were never fewer than 2,200 empty spaces. On all days all the cars parked in the centre could have been accommodated on the edge of town. If the central car parks were to close, this would cut down on traffic within the city walls, encourage walking, and help make Winchester a more attractive venue for the tourists who support the local economy.
