There have been many references to ‘Peak Car’ recently. It is claimed that the distance travelled by car in the UK has been reducing since 2005.

The National Travel Survey carried out by the National Statistics Office is probably the source of these claims. The 2010 figures (available in January 2012) show that, apart from a slight rise in miles travelled by drivers in 2010, there did indeed appear to be a steady decline, year-on year. Over the whole period this adds up to a 7% reduction in distance travelled by drivers, and almost an 11% reduction of distance travelled by passengers.
