Save energy at no cost

60% of the energy we use in the home is used to heat it. We don’t like feeling cold, so what can we do, without spending any money? Here are three ideas to save money and energy.

Set your radiator controls
  • If you have thermostatic radiator valves, set them at 3, wait a day, and then adjust to 2 or 4 if you’re too hot or cold.   Don’t forget, you can always put on a jumper. Turn down to 1 in rooms you don't use.
  • If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time.

Insulate and draught-proof your house

There’s not much point heating your home if the heat flies out through the roof, walls, and cracks.

  • Insulate your loft and cavity walls. Energy suppliers such as British Gas sometimes do this free of charge.
  • Seal gaps and cracks in walls around windows and doors and where cables and pipework comes in.
