Solar thermal systems heat water using sunlight so that your boiler does not have to work as hard. This means your boiler uses less energy. They work best on sunny south-facing roofs and can generate around half of your household’s hot water requirements.

Panels come in two main types – evacuated tube (left) and flat panel (below).  There is little difference between the two panel types in efficiency.

If you have a solar thermal system you are paid around 19p for each unit (kWh) of heat they generate over a seven year period.

Solar thermal systems work best for families using a reasonable amount of hot water and ideally the hot water cylinder should be run down first thing in the morning.
